With global temperatures rising faster than predicted, Earth Day 2009 looms as a day of both celebration and renewed dedication to action.  "This Earth Day we are starting the Green Generation, a worldwide movement that eveyone can join," said Kathleen Rogers, Earth Day Network President.  "The tough economic climate means that, more than ever, we have to plan a new green economy with a promising future for everyone."
Ten large US cities will organize major volunteer efforts for this year's event including New York, Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Austin, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.  Hundreds of other cities and towns will also host local events.  A simple on-line search will help find an Earth Day event closest to you at
"The tide has turned on people sitting by and waiting for their leaders to act alone in providing a brighter, cleaner future," says Peter Shapiro of the Green Apple Festival to be held on the National Mall in Washington DC on April 19th.
In all, over one billion people will participate in the 2009 Earth Day activities around the world.  Next year's events will culminate with the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2010.
